The best modern British spy series continued this year with SPOOK STREET from Mick Herron (John Murray, £7.99) which saw Jackson Lamb investigate a terror network while trying to protect former spymaster David Cartwright. Dolan tackles a difficult subject with empathy and authenticity while still delivering a riveting police procedural. In WATCH HER DISAPPEAR by Eva Dolan (Vintage, £8.99), DI Zigic and DS Ferreira investigate the murder of a man undergoing gender realignment as a woman. Lurid and graphic in detail, this was a compelling start to a new series. No one knows what the men talked about when they spent a night drinking in a Glasgow bar but, armed with facts from the court records of Manuel's murder trial, Mina speculates about how events unfolded.ĭebut of the year goes to Joseph Knox for SIRENS (Doubleday, £12.99), a gripping descent into Manchester's dark underworld with disgraced detective Aidan Waits sent undercover to infiltrate the empire of drug lord Zain Carver.

Staggering in scope and execution, this centres on a real-life meeting between notorious Scottish serial killer Peter Manuel and businessman William Watt whose family Manuel was later convicted of killing. My favourite crime fiction book of the year was undoubtedly THE LONG DROP by Denise Mina (Harvill Secker, £12.99).
